Marcel Breuers Wassily Chair
The Wassily Chair, also known as the Model B3 chair, was designed by Marcel Breuer in 1925-1926 while he was the head of the cabinet-making workshop at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany.
Contrary to common belief, the chair was not created with the sole purpose of being used by non-objective painter Wassily Kandinsky, who happened to be a faculty member at Bauhaus during the same time period. Although Kandinsky was fond of the chair's design, it was not made specifically for him. Breuer made a replica of the chair for Kandinsky's personal use..
The chair was named “Wassily” later by Italian manufacturer Gavina. They discovered the anecdotal Kandinsky connection while researching the chair's origins.
