Here at Furniture Fashion, we've made no bones about the fact that we're fascinated by lighting solutions of all sorts, and every once in a while, something comes along that truly floors us. Cheeky intellectual and designer extraordinaire Jonas Samson gets just such a reaction out of us with his light emitting wallpaper, using phosphorescent pigments, transparent layers and a light switch. The result is a patterned wall with a botanical print illuminating the space from within, making the need for external lighting sources obsolete. While the concept piece at the top of today's feature is from a Milan show of yore, Samson continues to delight with inventive new designs that play with light and expectation, with his work on permanent display in universities and airports the world over. But it's not all fun and games; there's a reason beyond the superficial for every choice he makes in his work. Says Samson: “Nothing he creates is done because it looks nice. There has to be a purpose, a genuine substance to it, that turns it from being something really, really good looking into something truly valuable.” But lest we forget: valuable or not, Samson's work is still… well, really, really good looking.
