What Are The Types of Flushing Systems
Gravity Toilet Flushing
This is the same basic flushing system for toilets that’s been in use since 1775. The water in your tank is released into the bowl, forced downward by gravity.
This then creates a siphon effect which literally sucks the waste from the bowl and out into the public sewer system, or your septic tank if you live in a rural area.
Pressure Assisted Flushing System
Toilets with a pressure-assisted flushing system look exactly like a conventional gravity-fed toilet. The difference is that the water tank also contains a separate container filled with air.
As the tank fills, the air inside this container is put under pressure, and when the toilet flush mechanism is activated this pressurized water is released.
This results in a “blast” of water rushing into the bowl, not only providing a more intense flushing system but also disposing of any waste far more thoroughly and with a single flush.
Double cyclone system
‘Double Cyclone’ is a term coined by toilet manufacturer TOTO.
It combines the best of gravity-fed toilets with the impact of a pressure-assisted model to create a powerful flushing system.
Basically, water is forced by gravity from the water tank but is then redirected into dual water nozzles. These nozzles force the water around the toilet bowl in circles, mimicking the motion of a cyclone, hence the name.
The neat part is that ‘Double Cyclone’ flushing still only uses 1.28 gallons per flush.
Dual flush system
Dual flush toilets have two different flushing modes.
One mode is designed for the removal of water waste (urine) typically using .9 gallons of water to do that, while the second mode is designed to flush away physical waste.
Dual flush is a feature you need to specify for your flushing toilet – it doesn’t come as standard.
